5 Myths in Digital Marketing

Often when we are approached by digital marketing clients, it appears to be a simple process. You get yourself a beautiful new website and you’d expect your business to instantly boom, right? Unfortunately not. There is still much work to be done and digital marketing is needed to maximise your visibility and grow your business further.  There are many myths surrounding digital marketing but from our experience, digital marketing is less of a luxury and more of a necessity. With it being Friday the 13th, we thought it a good time to explore and debunk some of the most common misconceptions out there.

“Digital marketing isn’t for me”

You may think that your business or industry is niche and will not benefit from digital marketing. We can assure you that digital marketing is very much for everyone. From mobility scooters to garden turf or high-end alloy wheels, if you have a business, you need a well structured digital marketing strategy. Whether it’s a focus is on social media, SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) or PPC (Pay Per Click); or you’re just looking to expand your online presence, digital marketing allows your business to be found by new potential clients all over the world. The opportunities are limitless.

“We have a website so no need marketing”

This is one we hear a lot. Creating a user-friendly, beautifully designed website for your business is a big step in the right direction but it won’t do all the work for you. Unfortunately, having a website alone is not enough to get your brand or business to rank first on Google. To get you noticed in the SERPs, your website requires updates to keep it fresh and allows Google to know it’s relevant. Writing blog posts, for example, will help to maintain regular traffic to your website which in turn will improve your SEO and improve the long term success of your website.

Once your website is up and running, consider your target audience and ask yourself, what are the business goals? What are your competitors doing? If your competitors are doing well, the chances are they’re doing a lot of work behind the scenes, in order to secure a successful following for their brands such as social media and content creation.

“My customers don’t use social media”

Whilst social media may seem time-consuming and daunting to some, it has never been more important for brands to get up to speed with social media marketing. Social media marketing allows you to boost your brand awareness, keep your customers up to date on your latest products and has been proven to boost web traffic by up to 44%.

By 2020, 40% of all consumers will be born in the years 1995-2000 (commonly known as Generation Z). This is a generation who own an average of 5 devices each and, having always had the internet readily available to them, they are a generation of researchers – constantly searching for the best value and the best user experience. Studies have shown that Generation Z uses social media for up to 7 hours per day and it is a commonly used way of communicating with brands and purchasing online. Surely this is proof that it has never been more important to get ahead of social media trends, reach out and engage your current and potential customers via platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“There’s no way of measuring the return on investment (ROI)”

“All content is good content”

Content creation is a key element in keeping your website up to date and ranking well. It’s also an incredibly efficient way of directing traffic to your website from social media or Google search results. However, whilst you want it to be seen by as many people as possible, you also want your content to appeal to the right demographic. Even the best-written piece of content won’t encourage clicks or conversions if it’s not targeted correctly. Before posting content on your website, we’d recommend considering the following…

  • Ask yourself, who you are writing to and what you want to achieve from it?
  • Keep it relevant to your business
  • Make it original and unique
  • Include a call to action that’s going to encourage the reader to get in touch with you
