We all love Twitter, right? Well, considering at the end of last year it reached 305 million active users, we’ll assume the majority of you share some interest. As it’s the social media giant’s 10th birthday this week, we thought we’d share a few fascinating facts about the renowned platform…

1. Most Followed User


Katy Perry currently stands as the most followed person with nearly 85 million followers, with a combination of quirky remarks, political opinions and instagram photos this popstar sure knows how to engage an audience.

2. Daily Active Users


There are, on average, 100 million daily active Twitter users. Impressive! However, Facebook still takes the lead with an astounding 968 million daily active users.

3. Most Tweeted Hashtag


The most tweeted hashtag tradition is #FF which stands for Follow Friday. This is where users encourage one another to follow their favourite accounts.

4. World Leaders


An estimated 83% of all world leaders use Twitter; this includes the President of the United States, Barack Obama and the UK’s Prime Minister, David Cameron.

5. Most Mentioned Person


As of March 2016 the most mentioned person on Twitter is Justin Bieber, with a near 1 billion total Twitter mentions!

6. Fastest Account to Reach 1 Million Followers


It took an impressive 4 hours 3 minutes for reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner (for those of you that have been living on another planet, previously known as USA Olympic gold medal winner, Bruce Jenner) to reach 1 million followers. She is the fastest person ever to reach this amount of followers in such a short time span.

7. Most Retweets


We all remember Ellen DeGeneres’ selfie with half of Hollywood’s A-listers at the Oscar’s, right? It turns out that selfie is the most retweeted tweet to date at 3.3 million! Combining both our obsession with celebrity culture and selfies, it was destined to be a social media hit.

8. Average Time Spent


The average time per month spent by users on Twitter is approximately 170 minutes…Maybe we should all put our phones down for a moment and engage in some real life conversation?!

9. First Tweet Ever Sent


The first tweet ever sent was in 2006 by co-founder Jack Dorsey and it read ‘just setting up my Twttr’.

When initial discussions were in place Twitter was originally going to be called ‘Friendstalker’; probably more descriptive for how the majority of us use it!
