Responsive Web Development – What is it?

What is Responsive Web Development?

Responsive web development is a way to make websites adapt themselves to different platforms. Once the internet was unique to computers, but now people regularly access the internet on mobile phones and tablets with all sorts of screen sizes and orientations.

The traditional approach to having a multi-platform website was to just have a separate design for mobile phones. But as the range of different platforms increases, this is an increasingly unworkable strategy. To give the proper experience, it would require one design for iPhones and another for Blackberry handsets. This would then be joined by another for netbooks, yet another for 7″ tablets, and so on.

Responsive web development is an advanced website design strategy that solves this problem. A website can now have a design which will rearrange and resize itself according to the platform it is being viewed on. This is done automatically, with no need for a new design to be created from scratch. Screen size, resolution, and orientation are all taken into account.

How Does This Work?

Responsive web development uses CSS media queries to determine the kind of environment a site is being viewed with. This enables all the vital information for size and layout to be compiled automatically.

This is combined with a flexible design, based around grids with elements that can be resized and rearranged. Based on the information gained from the CSS queries, the site can automatically resize the different elements to account for the machine it is being viewed on. It can also rearrange them. For example, if two side-by-side images would become too narrow for proper viewing, they can be arranged vertically so they have more screen width and can be given a more comfortable size.

Who is Using Responsive Web Development?

The advantages of responsive web development are clear and numerous. It allows all users to achieve an optimum experience, and therefore helps a website achieve maximum user engagement. As such, many large and well-known sites are adopting responsive web development principles.

One of the online world’s big recent announcements was Microsoft’s announcement of a Bing redesign. As well as unveiling a new logo and some fresh ideas, one of the major points raised was that the new design will automatically adapt itself to different devices. This is responsive web development in action, and many web professionals are keenly waiting to see what Microsoft has achieved.

As a mobile phone company, it is no great surprise that HTC have dabbled in responsive web development. Their site to promote the HTC One is not only a highly interactive and cleanly-designed site, but also an example of responsive design. It also gives you a chance to see responsive web development first-hand. Resize your browser window, and watch the site adapt itself instead of cutting content out.

Disney are one of the biggest, best-known, and best-loved companies in the world. For decades, they have brought magical entertainment to people of all ages. They now complement this by bringing their online content to users of all devices, with a responsive site design that adapts itself to different platforms.
